Launched by noted author Sherman Alexie\, Indies First encourages authors to volunteer at their local store\, to give back some of the support that independent bookstores have traditionally given to authors.\n\nSmall Business Saturday\, founded by American Express in 2010\, is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It is a day dedicated to helping support the local businesses that help to create jobs\, boot the economy\, and preserve neighborhoods.\n\n11:00 a.m.\n\nAllison Pataki\, author of The Traitor's Wife: The Woman Behind Benedict Arnold and the Plan to Betray America\n\nTold through the eyes of a fictional lady's maid\, the historical figures of Peggy Arnold and her husband\, Benedict the traitor\, comes to life in this debut historical novel by the daughter of New York's former governor\, George Pataki. While the general's name is now synonymous with betrayal\, little has been written about his much younger wife. Her servant\, Clara\, becomes an unwitting and unwilling witness to Peggy's conniving flirtations with British soldiers and spies\, her seduction of the general\, and her instigation of his eventual treason.\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n2:00 p.m.\n\nKatherine Reay\, author of Dear Mr. Knightley and her new book LIzzy & Jane\n\nIn a rich feast for the senses both literary and culinary Reay's novel introduces two estranged sisters who rediscover the meaning of family 15 years after their mother succumbed to cancer. Master chef Elizabeth\, or Lizzy\, has lost her touch at work and finds her New York restaurant slipping out of her control. Needing time off\, she journeys back home to sit in the oncology ward with her sister\, Jane\, who is now fighting breast cancer. The stressful circumstances force them back into a real relationship\, an uncomfortable reunion in which they confront their past and contemplate their uncertain futures. Jane Austen books and delicious foods remind them of surprising and comforting truths imparted to them by mother. Reay treats readers to a banquet of flavors\, aromas\, and textures that foodies will appreciate\, and clever references to literature add nuances sure to delight bibliophiles.
