SUMMARY:Charles J. Stick and His Gardens
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Charles Stick\n\n Tuesday\, November 12\n\n 6:30-7:30 p.m.\n\n Gorton Center\n\n 400 E. Illinois Road\n\n Lake Forest\n\n Join us for a program featuring Charles J. Stick\, the Virginia-based landscape architect renowned for his historically and culturally-based gardens filled with luxuriant blooms.\n\n A fascinating new monograph\, Charles J. Stick and His Gardens\, written by Jeff Poole\, puts a spotlight on Stick's beautiful designs. Focusing on residential gardens\, Stick draws on principles of Palladio\, Charles A. Platt and Russell Page to connect architecture to land and develop enticing pathways between formal planting and the landscape beyond.\n\n Organized into two main sections\, the book highlights four landscapes that Stick has designed and nurtured over decades of close collaboration with the owners: Crab Tree Farm since the mid 1980s in Lake Bluff\, Mount Sharon near Charlottesville\, VA\, Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich\, CT\, and Waverley in VA. Each one is examined in depth from a personal\, philosophical and design perspective\, revealing flourishing\, historically grounded landscapes and offering new insights into his process\, as well as the intimacy of his client relationships.\n\n The second section of the book features ten additional gardens including others in Lake Forest and Winnetka as well as all over the country that demonstrate Stick's ability to adapt his signature style to varied geographies.\n\n Mr. Stick's new book will be available for purchase and signing.\n\n \n\n This event was made possible by the generosity of Crab Tree Farm.\n\n \n\n The program is free\, but please register here by clicking on the RSVP button at the bottom of the page.\n\n \n\n \n\n Charles Stick is pictured above at right.
