SUMMARY:Local Legends: Mark and Franklin McMahon\, Art as Business/Business as Art
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society's sixth annual Local Legends event honors Mark McMahon and his late father\, Franklin McMahon. Join us for a captivating conversation between artist-reporter Mark McMahon and interviewer Bill Kurtis. Learn more about the McMahons\, who witnessed\, drew and told stories of pivotal historical moments. \n\n \n\nThe event takes place at 4 p.m. on Saturday\, October 24th at Gorton Community Center\, 400 E. Illinois\, Lake Forest\, in the John & Nancy Hughes Auditorium. Tickets are $75 and are available at www.lflbhistory.org. Don't miss this opportunity to learn the inside stories from the McMahons' unique and perceptive vantage points.\n\n \n\nAbout Franklin and Mark McMahon:\n\n \n\nFranklin McMahon was an artist-reporter whose work took him worldwide. A 'day in the office' would find Franklin in the courtroom of the Emmett Till trial or in the television studio at the Kennedy-Nixon debate or in Rome at Vatican II or at NASA mission control in Houston during Apollo XI. He said\, "An artist has a different way of seeing" and can "draw the corners." These drawings gave the world a unique perspective on historically significant events at which Franklin\, remarkably\, was present with paper and pen in hand.\n\nThe family business continues with Mark McMahon\, whose distinctive drawing style closely mirrors that of his father. Over the years\, Mark has been commissioned to record everything from the Columbia space shuttle launch for NASA to the Indianapolis 500 for Sports Illustrated. Prominent displays of Mark's large public art commissions are in Chicago and many corporate headquarters across the country. Lake Forest is honored to have some of his commissions in its schools and public spaces. \n\nLocal Legends is a celebration of our community's superstars. In previous years\, our Local Legends have shared little known stories and behind the scenes anecdotes that have not been heard before. After the interview\, there will be a light reception for guests and the honorees\, where McMahon artwork will be on display. Advance reservations requested\, please contact 847.234.5253 for more information or reservations.
