SUMMARY:Vietnam and the Struggles of 1966 Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Lake Forest Lake Bluff Historical Society at 2 pm on Sunday\, April 24th\, to celebrate 1966! This was a landmark year in American and world history\, marked by political\, economic\, cultural and military changes\, both in the U.S. and abroad. President Lyndon B. Johnson was hard-pressed to balance his desire to fund Great Society programs while attempting to simultaneously manage an escalating military effort in Southeast Asia. Americans witnessed a number of interconnected upheavals: the struggle for improved Civil Rights\, draft protests and resistance to the war in South Vietnam and the birth of the "Women's Liberation" movement. \n\nIn international news\, the "Space Race" between the United States and Soviet Union and the turmoil of China's Cultural Revolution garnered headlines\, while here in Chicago\, Civil Rights marches\, the shocking Richard Speck murders and Bobby Hull's NHL scoring title dominated local news coverage.\n\nPaul Grasmehr of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library will take us back to 1966 with his discussion of significant historical events of the year. The lecture will be held at the American Legion Hall\, 801 N. McKinley\, Lake Forest at 2pm on Sunday\, April 24th. The program is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Reservations requested\, call 847.234.5253 or visit http://www.lflbhistory.org.
