17th Annual Emerging Artists Exhibit

Deer Path Art League focuses on promoting the arts within the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff community through a very special Emerging Artists Exhibit, held each year. Art teachers from 15 local public and private schools submit 2-D and 3-D works by students in grades pre-school through high school. Hanging in the store windows of Market Square, students and parents are invited to view artwork on beautiful display. Ribbons are awarded for student work from each of the participating schools.

This year we will host the 17^th Annual Emerging Artists Exhibit in the Windows in Market Square.

The show will be displayed through the month of April 2024.

Apr 1 Eclipse Glasses Pickup

The total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th will be the last total eclipse visible from North America until 2044. To celebrate this event, the Lake Bluff Library will provide a limited number of eclipse glasses to the public. Registration will open on March 25th for the initial release. After the pickup time has expired, we will have an additional pickup day available for the remainder of our supplies on Saturday, April 6th.

Eclipse glasses are limited to 2 pairs of glasses per household.

This program is funded by the Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants from Illinois State Library. Additional eclipse glasses were donated by the Adler Planetarium.

Based on the true story of an Italian immigrant who ruthlessly fought his way into Al Capone's inner circle and expanded organized crime across the American West. It's hard to believe Sal Liparello has survived long enough to enjoy a midday scotch on his California tomato farm. The sixty-something crime boss from Chicago Heights helped take out Sicilian gangs, advised Al Capone on some of his biggest moves, and rubbed elbows with the Kennedys, Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe - all while avoiding the likes of Eliot Ness and J. Edgar Hoover. But as he surveys the fruits of his labor, Sal also remembers the cost of staying above ground and out of prison. And all those decisions are about to catch up with him. Ray Franze’s combination of curiosity, knowledge and amazing exposure to stories of the Chicago mob has given him a unique perspective to bring to life his debut novel. Ray has spent nearly 30 years trading options at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade after graduating with a BBA from the University of Iowa. He grew up with his two older sisters in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, where his loving parents and grandparents helped instill a strong work ethic, including the mantra “There’s no such word as can’t.” When Ray chose writing as a creative outlet, he relied on that mantra to finish his debut. And after more than 25 years in the “pits,” he has many more stories to tell. He lives with his wife of 20 years, Nicole, in the Chicago suburbs, where they raised three daughters. BLACK BEAR LAKE: Adam Craig still has nightmares about the last summer he spent on the shores of northern Wisconsin's Black Bear Lake. The Chicago stock trader thinks he has it under control - until fallout from an explosive August in 1983 threatens his marriage. So Adam returns to remember that month-long family reunion, where he was busy wrestling with developing adolescence, a parent's failing health, and watching his cousin Dannie's desperate cries for help. At 14, Adam's fear and anger were constantly threatening to pull him under while the current running through his family flowed, inevitably, toward tragedy. It was too much to bear back then. But will reliving those painful memories hurt or help Adam as his adult life teeters on the edge of collapse? Leslie Liautaud is the author of Midnight Waltzes (2006), He Is Us (2008), The Wreck (2009), SALIGIA (2011), The Mansion (2012) and Summer Nights and Dreams (2012) and Southern Gothic (2018). She is also the author of the coming-of-age novel, Black Bear Lake (Blue Handle Publishing, 2022). Leslie is originally from Kansas City, MO where she worked in the performing arts. Currently, she resides in Nashville, TN with her husband, Jimmy John Liautaud, their three children and four rambunctious dogs. Linda Scholly combines oil painting in a softened realism style with gold and silver leaf. Linda’s subject matter can range greatly, painting the things that most inspire her. She is influenced everyday by her immediate surroundings, big and small. Her love of nature and her fascination with winged creatures is one of her favorite subjects.

Linda has lived in Lake Forest, Illinois for over 20 years. She earned her BA in Fine Art from The Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago. She also studied at The School of the Arts in Lacoste, France through The Savannah College of Art and Design. She owned a successful mural company for many years before returning to her own oil paintings.

Join us as Emily Locker discusses her debut novel, Running Mates. Emily spent most of fourth grade persuading her friends to reenact scenes from Sweet Valley High. In her debut novel, author Jodi Solovy weaves a heartwarming and ultimately empowering tale about first love, marriage, family, friendship and choices. The story begins on an ordinary Monday afternoon in the life of 53-year-old Jen Mann, as she’s sitting with her lifelong best friend Cate at the local coffee shop, where they meet weekly for the comfort of a warm drink and quality time together. But on this particular Monday, Jen is distracted, unable to shake the malaise of being middle-aged and irrelevant, having almost adult children who no longer need her and a husband who seems to have grown bored with her.

Then, from out of the blue, she receives a message from the great love of her life, her Italian boyfriend Luca from 30 years ago, who happens to be in town. Midlife Mischief is Jodi Solovy's debut novel. She has always been a passionate writer, first as a lawyer and most recently as a blogger posting personal vignettes on her Substack, Jodi's Jaunts. She has three grown children and lives with her husband in the northern suburbs of Chicago. When she's not writing, reading or in a pool, she's trying to train her rambunctious puppy.

Apr 20 "Classics & Jazz"

Copland, one of the top prolific and hailed American composers, begins this annual unique offering of jazz and classical orchestral music. The images of Appalachia dance off the stage with folk idioms and melodies, traditional American dance rhythms, and a combination of rich and brilliant orchestral hues. Following that, led by LCSO Jazz Director Ivan Arden, the orchestra is joined by gifted jazz artists to play well known standards from the authentic orchestral library of Charlie Parker. Well known American jazz saxophonist, composer, and band leader, Parker was nicknamed "The Bird" and was a highly influential soloist and leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and advanced harmonies.

May 5 Lake Forest Civic Orchestra Sunday concert series - "Phoenix Rising"

The LFCO closes our season of celebration and looks ahead to next year with “Phoenix Rising.” Written in 2008, Stella Sung’s “Phoenix Rising'' reflects the tale of a mythical bird, the phoenix, which is considered a powerful symbol in many cultures throughout the world. We pair Sung’s work with Wagner’s popular Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The program closes with a work which occupied Johannes Brahms for decades, his Symphony No. 1.

Seeing is believing. Or is it? We've witnessed college and professional sports become multibillion-dollar industries, but with a Pandora Box full of problems. The contests themselves often raise questions. How could he miss that layup? How could he drop such an easy pass? How could the ref rule it that way? Did the gamblers get to the referee? The questions stretch all the way to a small town, Harrison, deep in southern Indiana. The local college may not have a sports team in the big time, but the town's proximity to a casino boat on the borderline Ohio River provides plenty of action for gamblers. The local Gamblers Anonymous chapter is the state's newest and busiest. Surely, it's the only one to have Abraham Lincoln rescue a member! This is the third novel in Mike Conklin's Town & Gown series. The others, each set in mythical Harrison, are "Transfer U." and "Class Dismissed."

Mike Conklin is a storyteller. He's written professionally for audiences since high school, where his media career started with a small-town weekly. He graduated to local and regional dailies, and, following a cup of coffee in TV & Radio broadcasting, made a long stop at The Chicago Tribune. There, he was a beat reporter, daily columnist, and feature writer with work nationally syndicated. Mike's also written for the New York Times, a variety of magazines, reviewed books, and, after leaving The Tribune, taught full-time at Chicago's DePaul University, where he took leaves to teach at other universities and colleges in the U.S. and China. Now, drawing on a kitbag full of experiences and characters, an eye for an entertaining narrative, and equal parts imagination, he writes novels. "He Bet The Farm" is his fourth.

Celebrating its decades of dedication to music education and performance, the Music Institute of Chicago hosts its Annual Gala Benefit on Monday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at The Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, 120 E. Delaware Place, Chicago. Event highlights include the presentation of the prestigious Dushkin Award to Marcus Roberts, the Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago to Fran and John Edwardson, and the Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence to Erica Anderson.

Gala leadership includes Honorary Chairs Karen Z. Gray-Krehbiel and John H. Krehbiel, Jr., and Co-Chairs Carlos R. Cardenas, Courtney Holohan and Wesley Mueller, David and Eileen Zampa, and Tao Zhu and Weihua Ye. Key sponsorship support for the 2024 Gala Benefit is provided by Grand Benefactor Alexandra C.
