Description
Presented by: Lori Goldstein, Attorney, Owner at Law Office of Lori A. Goldstein
While the economy and unemployment rates slowly improve, businesses (and individuals) continue to face financial difficulties. Employers remain cautious in their hiring and HR decisions and changes continue. These include drastic measures like plant closings and large reductions-in-force, and company reorganizations involving position eliminations and individual terminations, demotions, and reductions in compensation and benefits. As a result, claims of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation remain high.
The economy has also led federal and local governmental agencies to tighten enforcement on payroll and employment taxes. Employers have faced huge penalties, as well as liability to workers for years of overtime compensation and benefits, based on misclassifying workers as independent contractors, and misclassifying employees entitled to overtime compensation as exempt.
Even the National Labor Relations Board, historically focused on unionized companies, has pursued non-union employers on behalf of employees participating in social media. The issues involve company social media/electronic policies, appropriate workplace activities, employee participation in social media away from work, and employee privacy.
Lori has an impressive resume in employment law including sixteen years with Holleb and Coff, and ten years with Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon. Currently she has her own practice
representing employers and employees on a wide range of workplace issues, including discrimination and sexual harassment, management training, employment practice audits, wage-hour issues, worker classification, reductions-in-force, hiring and firing, and severance and employment agreements. Lori regularly presents and writes on employment topics, and
handles claims before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Department of Labor, and other administrative agencies. Lori believes in providing personal service to clients efficiently and economically, working to resolve legal workplace issues so that clients can focus on their work.
