Memorial Day in Lake Forest
Monday, May 26, 2014
11 a.m. – Market Square
The Lake Forest America Legion is pleased to invite Lake Forest residents to join us for ceremonies honoring our deceased neighbors who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. Directed by Janene Kessler, the 90-strong Lake Forest High School Band will accompany our Color Guard and Boy and Girl Scouts from the back of City Hall to the green at Market Square, shortly before 11 a.m. The crowd will recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and the band will play our National Anthem which will be sung by Kayla Higbee. All are encouraged to sing.
An Invocation will be said by the Reverend John Branson of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church.
Our Post Commander, Thomas Marks, will speak to the reason for Memorial Day. Following his remarks, the school band will play a medley of anthems, hymns for each of the constituents of our Armed Forces. Veterans of each should rise for their branch.
Vice-Commander William Gretz will introduce our speaker, Major Andrew Carl of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mrs. Larry Crone and Gerry Thompson will then conduct our American Legion Post Everlasting Ceremony.
Thereafter, the Color Guard Commander will order three volleys fired by our rifle squad. Taps will be played by Messrs. Timothy Walther and Tim Gersten of Lake Forest.
Father Branson will render the Benediction. Vice-Commander Gretz will conclude the gathering and ask for your assistance retrieving the 4,000 Flags posted before each veteran’s grave at St. Mary and Lake Forest Cemeteries on Tuesday May 27 at 9 a.m.
